About Us

The Geo-Institute (G-I) is a specialty membership organization focused on geo-professionals and the geo-industry. It is one of American Society of Civil Engineers’ eight specialty Institutes. Similarly, SFGI is the local specialty chapter mirroring the goals and purposes of the G-I. The purpose of SFGI is to locally promote an interest in and the general advancement of engineering knowledge in the fields of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, and related earth sciences.

Our geo-professionals work to improve the built environment, prevent the loss of life and property from natural and man-made hazards, and construct sound and reliable engineered facilities and structures.

UPCOMING EVENT

SFGI Happy Hour, Hosted by Keller with GRL

Thursday, March 20th, 2025
5:30 – 8:30 PM

SFGI is having a happy hour, hosted by Keller at Keller’s Walnut Creek Office (2 blocks away from the Walnut Creek BART Station)! Come join us for happy hour where you’ll meet fellow professionals and students from the Bay Area geotechnical and ground engineering community for an evening of drinks and socialization. This is an excellent opportunity to network and catch up in a fun, casual setting. In addition, you will also be learning from GRL about Shaft Quantitative Inspection Device (SQUID)!
GRL Engineers, Inc, is the largest professional engineering firm established to provide specialized testing, analysis, and consulting services to the deep foundation industry. The testing methods GRL provides improved foundation solutions, better quality control, and often significant savings in foundation cost or construction time.
Cast-In-Drilled-Hole piles are important deep foundation elements that carry large axial and lateral loads for all types of important structures. The concrete for CIDH piles is poured after drilling is completed and any change in the drilled hole’s dimensions can significantly impact a pile’s capacity. GRL will be presenting two quality assurance techniques that industry professionals utilize to confirm important pile parameters. First, SQUID, a cable-connected inspection device that verifies the bottom cleanliness of the pile prior to concrete installation. Second, SHAPE, a wireless inspection device that evaluates the actual hole construction; including the piles verticality and diameter relative to depth. These devices can serve as important quality control tools to successfully install such foundation elements.
