March 2017 – President’s Message
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – MARCH 2017 NEWSLETTER
President’s Message
by Jordan King, PE, M.ASCE, President, North Coast Branch
Greetings from the North Coast Branch! We are having a very active season with winter wrapping up and sunshine beginning to extend our days further into the evening. For me, the natural transition of the seasons has come to correlate well with the long-standing traditions of the North Coast Branch ASCE. It has been a truly gratifying experience to contribute to this community of people with so much history and great spirit of civic engagement.
I would like to recognize our Branch Officers for all their effort this year, including; Cody Long (Director), Nathan Stevens (Vice-President), Nick Cordtz (Treasurer), Lianna Winkler-Prins (Secretary), Tai Morgan (Practitioner Advisor), and Michael Layton (Multi-Media Coordinator). This dedicated team has taken leadership on coordinating events, and it has been fun working together to insure their success.
Activities the Branch coordinated in February include the annual crab feed at Merryman’s Beach house in Trinidad, engineer’s week proclamations, an E-Week commercial, and the annual “local” water quality design competition held in collaboration with Humboldt State University’s Environmental Resources Engineering Student Association. We are looking forward to upcoming coordination of mock interviews with HSU engineering students in March, and our annual awards banquet planned for late April where the engineer and project of the year for the North Coast Branch will be announced.
I would like to give special thanks to Matt Kennedy (ASCE Region 9 Governor) for his attendance at the crab feed, and sharing his now famous homebrew! Your presence inspires a new generation of engineers to get involved, and reminds us of how ASCE works to bring people together. I would also like to acknowledge the closing of Roy’s Club Italian Restaurant in Eureka. This establishment has been the preferred venue for hosting our monthly lunchtime presentations for a very, very long time. The doors are closing at Roy’s Club after nearly 100 years of service, and it will be missed.
The North Coast Branch is looking forward to new opportunities and the formation of a Younger Member’s Forum. We anticipate that greater involvement of a new generation of engineers will facilitate progressive change in the way we approach infrastructure and sustainability challenges in our society.
