BRANCH REPORTS – MARCH 2017 NEWSLETTER

Golden Gate Branch:

For Engineers Week, Branch President Jens Norman and Charles Anderson visited a 10th grade classroom at the Engineering Academy at Oakland Tech on February 21st. They led a straw and masking tape tower competition, gave a presentation about Civil Engineering, and answered the students’ questions about our field.

On Thursday, March 30th, the Golden Gate Branch is co-hosting a dinner program with EWRI. Rita Schmidt Sudman will be speaking at the dinner at Scott’s Seafood in Oakland. She is the Senior Advisor at Water Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that fosters resolution of water resource issues in California and on the Colorado River. She is the co-author of the 2016 book “Water: More or Less”.

We look forward to seeing you at the dinner program!

North Coast Branch:

The North Coast Branch hosted our annual crab feed event on Saturday February 11, 2017 with a presentation of the award-winning Arcata City Trail and foster Avenue Extension project. The presentation was given collaboratively by City Engineer of Arcata Doby Class, PE, Assistant City Engineer of Arcata Netra Khatri, PE, ES Deputy Director Community Services of Arcata Julie Neander, and Civil Engineer/Project Manager of GHD Josh Wolf, PE. The event was held at Merryman’s beach house on Moonstone beach in Trinidad. The crab feed was well attended by students and professionals alike with special guest Matt Kennedy (Region 9 Governor) in attendance.

We would like to thank the Cities of Arcata, Eureka, Fortuna, Blue Lake, Trinidad, Rio Dell, Cresent City, and Counties of Humboldt and Del Norte for proclaiming Engineer’s Week 2017! The Branch coordinated with these municipalities to inform the public and give proclamations along with developing an Engineer’s Week commercial highlighting local engineering and construction firms and projects. The E-Week commercial ran on our local television station during E-week and is available on Youtube.

The annual local water treatment competition was held on February 25th for preparing Humboldt State University engineering students for the upcoming MidPac Water Treatment competition. HSU’s Environmental Resources Engineering students have done well in the past and continue to enjoy the close collaboration between the student chapter and North Coast Branch.
