President’s Message – APRIL 2020 NEWSLETTER

A Word from the President and President-Elect

Rather than begin with the usual paragraph about what “exciting” things you’ll be reading in this issue of the Civil Engineer, we want to take the time to extend our best wishes to you and yours for health, healing, safety, and strength during these difficult days.  While working diligently to remain committed to the mission and strategic goals of the Society, the ASCE San Francisco Section wants most to see members’ safety as our number one goal.  Our Federal, State and Local governments have enacted some very extreme measures on the citizens in an effort to stem the tide of Coronavirus (COVID-19).  We are very hopeful that following these measures will meet their goals, and we can once again feel safe to work and live freely in our beautiful area.

There is abundant guidance out there pertaining to conduct during these times, effects of the virus, how to protect ourselves; and so, we thought we would offer some complimentary thoughts for our ASCE SF Section Members.  First, the Section is working with your branches, YMFs, institutes and groups to leverage webinar “systems” to aid them in continuing to provide technical presentations and virtual networking platforms without having to be in personal contact.  Additionally, Society has launched a COVID-19 resource page that collects online tools and tips into one location, with the latest updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and others, as well as tools, activities and topical online discussions with fellow members.

Perhaps now, with less of your time dealing with business related travel, it’s a good opportunity to check out the vast resources on the ASCE.org page.  During these difficult times, ASCE is committed to supporting the entire civil engineering community.  Check it out!

The ASCE SF Section Board of Directors recognize that you are likely experiencing significant disruption to your business, your communities and your families.  We sincerely wish you the best during these unprecedented difficult times.

With Kind Regards,

Edward J. Thometz, P.E., M.ASCE
President, ASCE SF Section
Fred Blickle, P.E., F.ASCE
President-Elect, ASCE SF Section
